Final round of Arena league 2013

 

Dover fielded the youngest and smallest squad of all teams in the final round of Arena league 2013 which was held at Dover on Saturday, yet they still finished in second place on a night or top class swimming. The gala was a very close affair with Dover fighting for very point along the way.

Devon Amos opened the night with a fine first place in the open 100m IM and she added first places in the 100 freestyle and 100 back making a clean sweep for all of her events.

The boys 9/11 yrs freestyle relay team looked impressive as they romped to victory thanks to fine swims from Tobi Sijuade, Chris Sharp, Finlay Evans and Tom Fisher. The 15/u girls freestyle team of Sophie Waller, Sophie Card, Sadie Milton and Zelie Quinn looked awesome as they also stormed to victory. The same team also romped home in first place in the 4 x 50 medley relay. The girls continued their fine form with a second place in the ladies open Medley relay with Sadie Milton on back, Sophie Waller on breast, Megan Curtis on fly and Devon Amos on the freestyle anchor leg.

Chris Sharp looked strong in the 11/u backstroke and touched ahead of a strong field, and Sadie Milton left a strong range of swimmers in her wake in the 15/u 100 backstroke to take maximum points for the Dover team. Edward Smith also swam well but was narrowly touched into second place in a very tight finish in the 15/u 100 back. Sophie Waller showed a superb sense of resilience when she destroyed a good field with a fine swim in the open 100 fly, Sophie then did the same in the 15/u age group fly and freestyle giving her maximum points from all of her individual races

It was then back to one of Dover’s youngest swimmers, Maria Evans, and she took second place in the 11/u butterfly. Team mate, Tobi Sijuade led from start to finish in the 11/u breaststroke, grabbing a first place an new club record along the way. Lee shepherd grabbed another first place for the team with a magnificent swim in the 100 freestyle.

Finlay Evans took a good second place in the 11/u butterfly, with Sian Leech also taking a second place in the 11/u breaststroke. Alfie Herrington produced another good swim to take second in the 13/u 100 fly to gain more pints for the team.

Sophie card continued her good form with another first place in the 15/u 100 freestyle, despite suffering from a chest infection and Sian Leech took first place in the 11/u freestyle.

The girls open squadron relay team put in a fine performance at the end of the night to touch second in a close race thanks to fine swims from Devon Amos, Sadie Milton, Zelie Quinn, Sophie Card, Megan Curtis and Sophie Waller.

 

When the final points were totalled this young team had swam themselves into an impressive second place considering their ages and squad size.

“This team did all we could expect and more, a second place finish at this level is impressive with such a young squad. It all points to a bright future for this team”
