Black Lion Development Gala Report

Dover lifeguard club junior squad impressed at the Black Lion Development gala held at the Medway park leisure centre , when they showed their class against some much older and more experienced teams.

There were first place finishes in individual events for Owen Smith (9/u freestyle), Alex Head (10/u IM), Helen Smith (18/u fly), Erin Van Pettigem (9/u breast), Mathew May (12/u Free), Sam Fidock (12/u IM), Sian Leech (12/u breast), Joe Medhurst (12/u breast), Dan Grunsell (10/u freestyle), Alfie Herrington (15/u fly), Poppy Carr (18/u IM), Jordan Roger Mills (9/u fly), and Gabriel Lyell (10/u breast).

The 12/u age group also saw the ‘guards take a clean sweep in the relays with first place for the medley relay team of Ashliegh Menniss, Joe Medhurst, Sam Fidock and Maria Evans and also the freestyle relay team of Mathew May, Maria Evans, Sian leech and Sam Fidock. The 11/u medley relay team also finished first thanks to fine swims from Grace riley, Ashleigh Menniss, Alex head and Mathew May.

There were good second place performances from Evie Herrington (11/u Breast, 10/u freestyle) , Missy carr (9/u freestyle, 10/u back), Ben Fidock (18/u fly, 18/u IM, 18/u breast), Adam Frost (9/u breast), Jordan Roger Mills (15/u back), Megan Curtis (18/u breast), and Joe Medhurst (12/u back)

The final event of the night was the squadron freestyle relay and Dover lead from the first leg to the last with the lead being stretched over every length. The team looked in awesome form as they were led out by Jordan Roger Mills, Owen Smith, Evie Herrington, Alex Head, Ashliegh Menniss, Mathew May, Sian leech, Sam Fidock, Maria Evans, Alfie Herrington, Alex Harding and Ben Fidock.

The team finished 3rd overall on the night, head coach Tim Hyde said “What made this an even more impressive result was the fact that our youngest swimmers were swimming lots of races across all age groups. For instance Jordan Roger Mills, who is still just nine, took 2nd place in the 15/u backstroke event and Mathew May was never given the chance to dry off all night as he had so many swims” “This young squad can feel very proud of this result tonight”.

Individual awards went to

Best Girl : Missy Carr

Best Boy : Owen Smith

Best Overall: Ben Fidock
