Open Water & Long Distance Swimming

DLGC has a long established Open Water Swimming section including long distance and English Channel swimming.

Our Open Water season runs from April/May through to September on a Sunday morning in Dover Harbour, from the ‘Channel Swimmers Beach’ in front of the Royal Cinque Port Yacht Club. If you wish to take part in our Open Water training sessions or events please contact our Open Water Secretary, Tanya Harding at dlgcopenwater@gmail.com.

Any training under DLGC guidance or participation in our Open Water events will be with the agreement of Our Open Water Secretary who will take into account age, ability and stamina. Anyone deemed not sufficiently capable to undertake any particular training or event will not be allowed to take part.

Swimmers can only enter our Open Water Club Championships provided they have been a member of the club for more than 2 weeks prior to the event.

Competing in Open Water Swimming

Open water swimming competitions take place in a river, lake or sea.  Long distance swimming is an open water event up to a maximum of 10 kilometres. Marathon swimming are events involving distances of over 10 kilometres. We travel to events such as Brighton for the Pier to Pier race, the Kent & SE Regional Championships at Portsmouth, Junior International & British Championships at the Albert Docks and National Age Groups at Nottingham.

See below for details of the DLGC Open Water Club Records.

- ASA organised swims:
Grand prix series each year, which consists of 5K races, held in the South, the Midlands, the North and the finals being held at Nottingham.
National Age Groups which are held at Nottingham.
British 5k & 10k championships.
Some ASA Regions organise regional championships and grand prix. The SE Region ASA is one of the regions to do this.

- FINA organised events:
FINA organise an International programme. There is qualifying criteria for these swims as there is big prize money.

- British Long Distance Swimming Association organised events:
The BLDSA organise their own grand prix which includes approximately 13 swims at different venues around the country.
Please don’t be confused by the definitive word of "competition" as “open water swimming” is also about personal challenges
and achievements.

Boxing Day Dip

The Club also organises Dover's Annual Boxing Dip on the beach at 12am (26th December) in front of the Dover Sea Sports Centre.  For those wishing to join in or spectate the tradition of the DLGC Boxing Day Dip at Dover Seafront, registration starts from 11.15am. The event is free to DLGC Members and there is a small charge for non-members (for the badge) but remember to register.  The 'dip' is for 5 minutes and is supervised by lifeguards and marshalls to keep people safe. A fun event for all ages! Fancy dress optional! We hope to see you there!

Channel Swimming

We have a history of solo and relay team successes across the English Channel (escorted by one of the regulating firms).

See below for details of the DLGC English Channel Swimming Records.
