Folkestone Developmental Gala

2014-03-16 17:11:23

Dover lifeguards took the short trip to the Folkestone pool on Saturday with the youngest ever squad of swimmers. This team had only one swimmer over the age of 12, with many 10 and 11 year olds swimming in the 18 and under age groups yet still clocking superb times for their relevant age. Showing the clubs new focus on younger talent is now starting to pay dividends and the longer term prospects at the club are bright with this young squad showing they are not afraid of much older (and physically larger) competitors.
Sian Leech opened the gala with a fine 1st place in the 18/u backstroke despite her only being 12 years old with a time of 36.67. In the first quarter of this gala the team clocked 3 speeding tickets, which are medals of honour thanks to fine swimming from, Finlay Evans (11/u breast 45.84), Jordan Roger Mills (12/u fly 34.02), and Adam Frost (10/u back 44.58). There was also a fine first place from Evie Herrington in the 10/u 100 IM in a time of 1.36.23. Ben Fidock then scooped first place in the 18/u fly (30.72) and Grace Riley took another first in the 11/u back (46.02). Adam Frost then showed what great form he is in with another first in the 9/u breast (52.08) and with second places from  Sam Fidock ( 15/u back 39.44) and Evie Herrington (10/u fly 47.39) the team were performing well. There were more speeding tickets for Gabriel Lyell (11/u back 41.66) and Mathew May (12/u free 33.07) and with both the 10/u freestyle team of Dan Grunsell, Zoe Janssen, Owen Smith and Tilda Van Pettigem and the 12/u freestyle team of Mathew May, Ashleigh Menniss, Sian Leech and Ben Waller taking second places the team were well placed at the half way mark.
Sian leech then stepped up again to the 18/u age group and she took 2nd place in the freestyle with a time of 32.41. This was quickly followed by 1st places fro team mates Ali Corbo (11/u fly 41.07) and Zoe Janssen (9/u back 45.42). Sian Leech then showed her class again, swimming in her own age group when she took first place in the 12/u breaststoke with a time of 45.34.Sian then took 2nd place in the 15/u butterfly, grabbing the team vital points. There were s[eeding tickets for Zoe Janssen (10/u freestyle 39.13) and Dan Grunsell (10/u freestyle  38.05). There was a further speeding ticket for Tobi Sijuade in the 12/u back with a time of 38.63, Evie Herrington grabbed another second place in the 11/u freestyle and the 9. 10, 11 and 12 year medley relay teams all grabbed second place in their races.
The tense wait for the points totals saw Dover finish a close 4th place on the night but the team has impressed coach Tim Hyde due to the way the took on the much older competitors. “ this team were amongst the best of the swimmers here despite the fact that they were giving away in some cases up to 8 years in growth and development to their rivals from the other clubs” “in a few years time I have no doubt we will have champions out of this young squad”

There were individual awards to Adam Frost (best boy ), Ashleigh Menniss (best girl) and Sian Leech (best Overall)
