2014-01-31 13:48:54

Welcome to a new weekly article. Each week a swimming word or phrase, and explanation will be in the news, so you understand what you are doing and why.

HYPOXIC TRAINING

HYPOXIA is the term used to identify reduced oxygen supply in blood and blood tissues.

HYPOXIC TRAINING refers to swimming a repeat distance with a restricted breathing pattern in the belief that it will reduce oxygen supply. When they swim hypoxic repeats, swimmers do not breathe once during each stroke cycle, as is common practice. Instead they hold their breath for one or more stroke cycles before taking a breath. For example:

8x100m F/S, each 100 breathing pattern 3,5,7,9,9,7,5,3 or

8x100 F/S, each 100 breathing pattern 2,4,6,8,8,6,4,2.
